Efficacy of Vitamin E and Vitamin C in the Treatment of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a subset of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is becoming an increasing health concern, with current data showing the prevalence in the United States to range between 5.7%–16.5% (1,2). Patients with NASH lack a history of significant alcohol consumption, but liver biopsy findings are almost identical to biopsy findings in patients with alcoholic steatohepatitis (3,4). NASH is characterized by macrovesicular steatosis and hepatocyte injury with or without fibrosis (5,6). While NAFLD is generally considered to have a benign clinical course, NASH progresses to cirrhosis in 15%–25% of patients (2). Once cirrhosis develops, hepatocellular carcinoma may result. Prevention of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis in Rats by Two Manganese-Salen Complexes
Background: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a progressive stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is characterized by steatosis with inflammation. Investigations have suggested that oxidative stress may play an important role in the progress of NAFLD to NASH. To provide further insights into beneficial effects of antioxidants in NASH prevention, we employed two manganese-supero...

Abstract Objective: Nowadays, lifestyle modification is the best treatment recommended to patients with the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The therapeutic effects of vitamin E and silybin on liver functions were documented. The present study was conducted to examine the effect of silymarin and vitamin E on patients with NAFLD. CONTEXT No effective treatment is available for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in nowadays. OBJECTIVES To develop a model of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis induced by a methionine and choline deficient diet, as well as to evaluate the role of metformin, vitamin E and simvastatin in the nonalcoholic steatohepatitis progression. METHODS The study analyzed prospectively 50 Wistar rats for a 90-day...

BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is a common liver disease that can progress to cirrhosis. Currently, there is no established treatment for this disease. METHODS We randomly assigned 247 adults with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and without diabetes to receive pioglitazone at a dose of 30 mg daily (80 subjects), vitamin E at a dose of 800 IU daily (84 subjects), or placebo (83 subjects)...
متن کاملManagement of fatty liver disease with vitamin E and C compared to ursodeoxycholic acid treatment.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Despite a proposed role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, antioxidant approaches have not been investigated sufficiently in the therapy of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Our aim was to determine whether vitamin E plus C therapy is effective in normalization of liver enzymes compared to ursodeoxycholic acid treatment in patients with fatty li...
